I came across this short but helpful video about overcoming your fears to riding a bike in the city. It is part of a series called “Urban Biking” and is produced by Mind The Gap.
Video source: Laura Lukitsch, YouTube, January 26, 2011.
I think the following suggestions were good:
- Take your first few rides with someone who is an experienced urban cyclist.
- Start on smaller streets and work your way up.
- Take a bike skills/road rules course.
- Just do it! The best way to build your confidence is to practice.
- Wear a helmet
Funniest suggestion: “Beware of small dogs!” I can’t say I consider this much of an issue in Toronto. Perhaps it is in San Francisco, where the video was made! I’ve also written about renting a bike in San Fran.
